A Modern David vs. Goliath Story - Except David is a female!
E. Jean Carroll – She Could and She Did!
Courageous is simply one word to describe the decision by E. Jean Carroll to stand up to a celebrity name, Donald J. Trump who claimed that, “When you’re famous, they’ll [women] let you do anything, even grab them by the pussy.” UGH! She determined to hold Trump accountable because she’s gutsy and smart (and, had an equally smart lawyer!) Trump wanted to forget his sexual aggression and proceeded to smear E. Jean for her disclosures, but she was not one to back down, even from the threat by a powerful, wealthy figure.
Twice by a jury of her peers, after hearing evidence, she was vindicated. On 5/9/23, a jury composed of six men and three women found Trump liable for defamation and sexual assault and awarded E.Jean Carroll $5 million in damages. After this lawsuit was settled, Trump’s continuous defamatory remarks prompted E. Jean to file another lawsuit. On 1/26/24 a jury again ruled in her favor and this time awarded her $8.3 million in damages!
The assault by Trump in a Bergdorf Goodman dressing room in 1995 or early 1996 was described in a New Yorker article and in E. Jean’s most recent 2019 book, What Do We Need Men For?: A Modest Proposal. Trump forcefully denied the allegations saying he had never even met E. Jean Carrol and then proceeded to smear her, calling her a liar, “whack job” and “not my type.” In November 2019, Carroll initially filed a defamation lawsuit with the New York Supreme Court. The suit stated that Trump had damaged her reputation, substantially harmed her professionally, and caused emotional pain. In fact, it was in late 2019 that Carroll was fired from Elle magazine. She had been a columnist for the magazine since 1993. Her popular advice column Ask E. Jean was the longest running such column advising women about sexuality and their lives. The 2019 lawsuit went through several phases when the US Justice Dept. (under Trump’s presidency) argued that Trump was acting in his official capacity responding to Carroll’s claims. This argument did not hold up in court.
A law passed by New York State in 2022 reinforced Carroll’s ability to sue Trump for battery, sexual abuse, and defamation. Under the new law, the Adult Survivor’s Act, adult sexual assault victims now had the opportunity to file civil cases, even if the statute of limitations had long expired.
What positions and patterns in E. Jean Carroll’s chart would account for her determination and persistence? We don’t have the benefit of her birthtime, so the Moon could be in late Gemini or early Cancer. Since she was a long-time advice columnist, I’ll begin with her strong natal Venus in Scorpio square Pluto/Leo, a fierce personal archetype for fairness and equality. Both planets connected to the Nodal axis, Aquarius/Leo suggesting a wider audience for her relationship insight and experiences. Scorpio has a long memory and E. Jean had not forgotten Trump’s aggression perpetrated on her so many years ago. Fighting for, engaging with, or supporting causes larger than herself is one attribute for Venus/Scorpio which is attuned to the prevailing social and political zeitgeist. Venus is said to be in detriment in Scorpio meaning that it resists being too compliant or cooperating simply to placate others. This Venus is willing to persist and hold ground when needed. Her Mars, the traditional ruler of Venus/Scorpio is in the verbal, witty, communication, air sign, Gemini and explains how she acts on strong Venus/Scorpio values, by discussing them and broadcasting them.
Her chart has a unique pattern of interlocking connections between Mercury and Venus, Pluto and Uranus. Once you draw the lines between these planets it looks like a cat’s cradle – that old string game. Essentially it suggests complex and creative cleverness, depth insight, wit, with a substantial dash of unconventionality and boldness. Her Mercury in Capricorn, the planet of language and communication (ruling the Gemini cluster of planets encircled) is firstly pragmatic and combining with Venus in Scorpio brings deep intuition and emotional intelligence about existing social patterns, mores, and traditions. Mercury, the ruler of her Gemini cluster makes the most connections to other planets, giving it greater voice and interest on a range of topics. With Uranus in the mix, and we have a quirky and humorous mind, perfectly explaining her witty, outrageous, and compelling writing style, offering the need to break free of outmoded constraints.
Her Sun in Sagittarius is on the language, communication, philosophy axis and opposes Saturn in Gemini – a life that aspires to living with purpose, integrity, respect, and commitment and to voice opinions about whatever captures its interest.
E. Jean Carroll is a heroine and an inspiration (and a former Miss Indiana too!) She spoke her truth and made it easier for women everywhere to speak up and speak out, when aggressive sexual acts, in the still existing patriarchy, means a woman is nearly destroyed or blamed and surely harassed. She stood for those women who could not bear the additional aggression of being smeared, receiving death threats, or being hounded at their homes for daring to tell of the sexual violence committed against them. Her bravery has sent ripples across the land at a time when women need all the support they can get to reclaim the right of their body integrity in many ways. Interestingly, her birth Jupiter 27 Leo, is exactly opposite the USA Moon 27 Aquarius meaning that her story has affected the psyche of women across the United States and beyond in enlightening ways. E. Jean, you go girl!
